I teach a 400-level communication class called “Law & Policy of Communication Technologies” to undergraduates majoring in communications. The course emphasizes the critical thinking component of decision-making, and students find it very interesting to read the actual arguments of a case, rather than just being exposed to the predigested summaries typically found in textbooks. The typical class session is a blend of relatively short lectures to capture the more technical or distant material and discussion based upon the Notes & Questions.

The course is successful, and a good part of the success is the organization suggested by the casebook. My teaching evaluations are quite good, and the casebook and communication students interested in law and policy issues evaluate the casebook as challenging but very informative. In fact, the exposure to this material has prompted students each semester to investigate the possibility of law school.

The bottom line is that this casebook is surprisingly useful even for nonlaw students. And I would encourage faculty teaching outside of law schools to consider adopting it in their classes.
